The Rise of Eco-Friendly Packaging: Why Paper Bags Are Leading the Way

Eco-Friendly Paper Packaging

Aside from your local grocery store, if you’ve visited a restaurant, fast food chain, or even your favorite retail outlet in the past few years, you’ll have noticed one thing: no more plastic. This stands to reason, as consumers have been demanding more environmentally-friendly products and practices from corporations and businesses to offset the effects of climate change. A big part of these green initiatives has been the switch from plastic and styrofoam to eco-friendly paper packaging. Aside from benefiting the environment, eco-friendly paper packaging affords businesses unique opportunities in branding and design, support for local suppliers and optimization of supply chains, and a reduction in spending on packaging.

The Benefits of Going Green

Most industries have readily embraced the move to eco-friendly packaging as not only an effective way to help the environment but also a way to satisfy customer demand while saving money in the process. Recyclable, biodegradable, and even edible packaging is rapidly fulfilling the need in industries as varied as food services, retail, and even airlines. Recycled paper, cardboard, and compostable materials such as mushroom packaging are also cheaper to manufacture and purchase than plastic, making their use a solid financial decision.

Opportunities in Branding & Design

When discussing eco-friendly paper packaging, thoughts tend to drift toward the brown, sterile-looking grocery bags associated with the supermarkets of yesteryear. For forward-thinking, creative, and enterprising businesses, that drab and bland backdrop can be interpreted as a canvas, able to be adorned with creatively eye-catching designs that can prove indelibly memorable to potential consumers. In this sense, promoting brand recognition in the form of logos, designs and avatars, and QR codes is an excellent way to make prodigious use of eco-friendly paper packaging.

Saving Green $$$

Using eco-friendly paper packaging saves more green than just what’s found in the environment: it saves money as well! This is evident when one realizes that the procedures involved in extracting, refining, processing, and manufacturing plastic and styrofoam is much more expensive than it is for similar procedures involved in the creation of paper packaging products. Additionally, recycling paper products is much less expensive than attempting to recycle most plastics. From a purely financial standpoint, it makes much more sense to use eco-friendly paper products that have a reusable shelf life, as opposed to plastic, which is a single-use item in most cases.

Of course, some sustainable packaging may be a tad more expensive to use, particularly when discussing things like mushroom and edible packaging. However, weighing the pros and cons of using these types of eco-friendly packaging will quickly reveal the benefits of their utilization. First and foremost, specific sustainable packaging lends itself to specific industries: restaurant and fast food businesses would definitely benefit from the branding opportunities involved with edible packaging.

Further, when designing your unique packaging aesthetic and working to establish your brand, it may be best, in the initial stages, to be conservative with how much material you actually use in your packaging. This can help you save money in the long run or at the very least, until you are established and able to incorporate more intricate designs that won’t break your bank!

Cost-Effective Efficiency in the Supply Chain

For those companies truly invested in green practices and safeguarding the environment, sourcing local for sustainable and eco-friendly paper packaging materials is an excellent practice.

It’s no secret that fossil fuels are one of the biggest contributing factors to climate change, and having packing materials delivered by truck, train, plane, or boat from distant, overseas suppliers is counter-productive to safeguarding the environment. Rather, procuring sustainable packaging from local suppliers cuts both carbon emissions and travel time exponentially. Perhaps even more importantly, shorter distances for delivery also saves money in shipping. For travel time, environmental, and financial considerations, sourcing sustainable packaging material locally is your best bet.

As well, developing close ties with sustainable and eco-friendly paper packaging companies is an excellent way to not only grow two businesses, but refine them. By establishing solid partnerships with suppliers that are based on transparency, collaboration, and open communication, you can identify areas for improvement in spheres regarding sustainability, business operations, and best practices. These relationships can be leveraged to help your business not only thrive in terms of sustainability, but also in cost-efficiency and overall savings.
