How Paper Bags are Revolutionizing Retail Packaging

The Use of Paper Bags in Retail Packaging

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when kitchen cupboards and spare closets all over the country had one shelf filled with multiple, multi-colored plastic bags emblazoned with the names and logos of popular department stores like Sears, Zellers, and The Bay. A lot has changed since then, not the least of which is the disappearance of many of these megastores through new trends in commercial consumption and the proliferating use of paper bags in retail packaging. Paper bags have almost completely replaced plastics in retail outlets across the continent, and have afforded both consumers and retailers revolutionary benefits!

Using Paper Bags in Retail Packaging Is Good for the Environment

It’s common knowledge that plastic is not good for the environment.

The first step involved in making plastic, mining for resources, greatly disrupts and destroys ecosystems and jeopardizes livable habitats for animals, plants, and human beings. Further industrial processes, such as refining, processing, and manufacturing plastic products (like retail bags), utilize tremendous amounts of energy from fossil fuels and hydroelectric plants, putting strain on our energy production systems and emitting a substantial amount of carbon into our atmosphere. These processes, coupled with emissions from transportation, contribute substantially to climate change. As a single-use item, plastic bags cannot be recycled, contributing substantially to the volume in landfills and pollution. Perhaps most disturbingly, plastic bags are a source of endangerment to marine life, who become entangled or die after ingesting them.

Conversely, using paper bags in retail packaging is much more safe and beneficial for the environment. First, the energy and resources involved in creating them are significantly less extensive than in creating plastic bags. Further, as they are made from a renewable resource (trees), paper bags can be recycled and composted, making them an inexhaustible source of viable packaging. These qualities also make paper bags safe for the environment, as they stay out of landfills and are biodegradable.

Perfect Functionality

There’s a false assumption that paper bags are not as effective as plastic in terms of functionality. This cannot be further from the truth, as paper bags are perfectly capable of carrying retail items and protecting them from the elements.

Paper bags are made from a combination of paper and wood pulp that is also reinforced with glue. When designed and constructed in specific ways (including layered folding, corrugation, flaps, and the addition/incorporation of handles), paper bags are just as strong if not stronger than plastic. In this sense, using paper bags in retail packaging is a perfectly functional and viable alternative to plastic.

Branding Opportunities

The 80s may have been the peak of plastic bag production in multi-colored formats, as almost every retail outlet in North America sought to brand their business with an ostentatious logo adorned in neon fuschia, turquoise, or yellow.

That those days are (thankfully) behind us does not mean that retailers cannot exercise maximum creativity in exploring branding options with paper bags. Aside from having a blank canvas on which to incorporate your business’ logo and colors, features like embossing (print or images) and QR codes can go far in distinguishing your brand from others. Rather than hinder it, using paper bags in retail packaging actually enhances branding opportunities for an enterprising, cutting-edge company!

Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness

Since the process involved in manufacturing paper bags in retail packaging is less extensive than plastic, it is also less expensive. This translates to cheaper costs for retailers in terms of both purchasing and transport and ultimately, less transferred costs to your customers.

Additionally, this efficiency in manufacturing operations and sourcing from renewable materials translates to a nearly inexhaustible supply of paper bags and products. Rest assured, you can order substantial quantities of paper packaging stock without fear of limited quantities. Further, these paper packaging products can be manufactured at great speeds due to innovations in production technology and processes, ensuring you’ll receive them in a thoroughly expedient manner.
